Fountain pumps must always be used while submerged. Never operate the pump in air as water is needed to cool the pump and keep the correct temperature for operating. To extend the life of the pump always maintain the correct water levels for your fountain and do not constantly turn the pump on and off. Maintain the fountain properly and do not let debris build up as this can settle in the pump and cause damage. To prevent dust or animal dander from entering the pump is to use a piece of panty hose, place the pump inside and tie the ends with rubber bands.
To clear debris from the pump, turn it off and clean the outside of accumulated dirt and algae. Scrub gently or soak in vinegar to remove any stubborn algae. Slide off the pump cover and remove the impeller. Clean off any debris on the impeller or shaft then replace and close the cover. The pump can now be replaced in the fountain and turned on.
If the pump is noisy check to see that it is fully submerged and not vibrating on the fountain basin or sides. The pump can be isolated by placing it on a Scotchbrite pad or something similar.
